DrumSight3D

DrumSight3D uses deep learning techniques to generate precise 3D models based on images captured with COTS image sensors, excelling in environments where human entry is not feasible, and offering a robust solution for detailed visualisation and analysis.

What is DrumSight3D?

DrumSight3D is a system which automates the scanning of the geometry of an object and the creation of an associated digital twin with an accuracy of +/- 0.5 mm. DrumSight3D was developed for a FIS360 Game Changers challenge focusing on the detection and monitoring of deformities in 500L radioactive waste drums at Sellafield. Utilising a series of commercially available cameras rather than a laser scanner or similar technology, DrumSight3D is capable of operating in moderately radioactive environments without a single expensive point of failure and enables an automated, hands off scanning system.

How Does DrumSight3D Work?

DrumSight3D’s scanning array consists of a series of motorised pan tilt zoom (PTZ) heads which house commercial off the shelf camera solutions, e.g. DSLR cameras. These cameras are arranged around the target object and can be placed on a variety of tripods, rails or other mounting points.

Utilising a custom focus algorithm and remote lens control, the system possess the capability to automatically determine the best focus camera settings for the target and make suitable adjustments. Additionally, the software can remotely control the zoom of the camera allowing for close up and wide-angle shots of an object.

DrumSight3D’s software manages and coordinates a series of these cameras to automate the capture of several thousand images of the target from a variety of angles due to the PTZ mounts. Once an appropriate number of images have been captured the software is able to create a point cloud based digital twin using cutting edge photogrammetry techniques that integrate machine learning technologies.
DrumSight 3D Software
The geometry of the digital twin is accurate to +/- 0.5 mm and can be used to investigate the physical condition of the target object. If used to scan a uniform shape, the system can automatically detect, catalogue and inform the user of any surface deformities. With repeated scans of the same target the development of deformities’ size and shape can be quantified and reported upon.

The information that DrumSight3D collects and reports gives a complete and accurate record of the geometry of an object at the time of the scan which can be used to assess the condition of the target. With multiple scans over a longer period of time, degradation of critical components can be monitored and quantified allowing for the targeting of preventative maintenance and reducing unexpected operating costs.

The applications for this product are not limited to the nuclear industry as DrumSight3D could also be adjusted to be used with a large range of targets such as containers, turbine blades and other items which require periodic measurements of dimensions in environments where laser scanning may not be appropriate.

How Can I Use/Purchase DrumSight3D?

DrumSight3D has recently completed the proof-of-concept phase including a demonstration to key stakeholders including Sellafield and FIS360. Cerberus Nuclear is looking to commercialise this product within the nuclear industry and other sectors. If interested in the technology, please get in touch to discuss potential deployment opportunities or request a demonstration.
