The European Space Agency (ESA) recently hosted the European Space Radiation Shielding Workshop, RADSHIELD 2026, at its ESTEC site in the Netherlands. Cerberus Nuclear sent 4 attendees, Tom, Nathan, Andrew S, and Thomas, who had an amazing 2 days listening to a whole host of different talks that really helped expand our understanding of the space sector specific challenges when it comes to radiation shielding.
In addition to sitting in on talks on material development, multi-layer shield optimisation, and shielding case studies such as the Australian “Roo-ver” project, we also gave our own talk on MORED. We are delighted to say that it was well received by the mixed audience of engineer and researchers!
Impressed by the current prototype and the initial project turnaround time, many were interested in the next steps and how it could be integrated into the wider suite of European produced software to support the space sector. We look forward to continuing its development and showcasing the benefits of cross-sector contributions.
We also had the fantastic opportunity to tour SCIONIX's facility in the Netherlands! It was great to meet the team and find out more about all of the exciting radiation detection instruments that they are working on!
Our colleagues also enjoyed brilliant weather while over in the Netherlands and were lucky enough to fit in a little bit of sightseeing as well. Between trying Kibbeling, walking along the beach with the setting sun, attending the Van Gogh and Rijks Museums, and some souvenir shopping in ESA’s own store, we certainly made the most of the trip!
